If you’ve had dogs in the past, you might be beginning to see a disturbing trend that they aren’t living as long as they used to. It wasn’t uncommon for dogs to live to 15 years, the exception being to 18 years old.
These days it seems they’re lucky to reach 4 years or even less before succumbing to some disease or another.
You think you’re doing the right thing, feeding a recommended dog food, but still they don’t seem to be as healthy as your previous dogs.
Why is this so common?
Veterinarian and author Alfred Plechner, reports "Because many commercial foods are woefully deficient in key nutrients, the long term effect of feeding such foods makes the pet hypersensitive to its environment”.
What you are about to read may mortify, even horrify you, that you have been slowly poisoning your beloved pet.
But before we go there, lets look at some of the typical advertisements for commercial pet food, recently searched for on the internet.
"Brand X is 100% nutritionally complete and balanced."
“Brand X pet food that has been scientifically blended can have an immediate impact on your pet’s energy levels and general health”
“Brand X pet nutrition products are a range of super premium dog and cat foods using selected, quality ingredients.”
“Brand X is 100% Nutritionally Complete & Balanced and contains a variety of carefully selected flavours and textures for a delicious and healthy meal every time.”
"Everyone wants the best for their dog – and Brand X delivers in so many ways. Brand X only produces high quality foods using wholesome, all-natural ingredients to keep your dog healthy and happy."
"Brand X is made from only quality, natural ingredients."
One brand had the option of choosing between a "can" and "natural" (which was a packet of dried food).
It all sounds so rosy doesn’t it?
Are advertised claims such as ‘nutritionally complete’ true?
Rosy, feel good advertisements can give consumers a false sense of knowledge and security, if there is no legal requirement for advertisers to be truthful. And there doesn’t seem to be, anywhere in the world… Or the wording can be very slightly altered to make it legal, but misleading.
Pet food companies spend millions annually on advertisements to manipulate you into buying their pet food which has the cheapest, lowest quality, most poisonous ingredients possible, to maximise their profits.
So let’s look at some of the worst problems with most commercial pet food.
What meats are typically used in pet food?
Processed pet food often comes from animals who are dead, dying or diseased, some of it cancerous, along with other rejects for human consumption, giving the overall balance of very low grade food.
Generally, only about 30% of commercial pet food is meat, usually by-products which can be anything from ‘waste’ meat from human meat processing plants, fat, diseased carcasses, to intestines (plus contents – poo to you and me), hair, hooves, etc. Different proteins have varying digestibility. Cheap forms of protein has almost zero nutritional value for your dog.
OK, so you may be a bit disgusted, but you’re probably not horrified are you?
Yet.
WARNING; the following information may shock you.
The multibillion dollar pet food manufacturers are manipulating you into believing their food is quality, by smiling vets and dog breeders on their packets. Don’t get sucked in.
Author and research investigator, Ann N. Martin discovers many commercial pet food contains euthanased animals, mostly cats and dogs, but also zoo animals, horses and animals from control measures. There may even be roadkill in it, too. Nicely baked for days in hot summer sun.
Do you know what is used to euthanase animals?
It’s sodium pentobarbital. This chemical is not broken down by the cooking process in manufacture. It is still active in your dog’s food!
Your dog may be ingesting the chemical used to kill!
Some pet food rendering plants don’t bother to ‘clean’ the euthanased animals and it’s not uncommon to have collars, flea collars (with their high levels of pesticide) and ID tags thrown in the mix.
To me, that’s pretty shocking. I’m guessing you’re having trouble with that too. But there’s more…
Do you remember the outbreak of mad cow disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), in the UK back in the 1990’s? Do you remember what the cause was? It was because ruminant protein was part of the feed given to other ruminants. In other words, dead sheep were processed into cow feed.
Hold on a minute. Cows are vegetarians.
Aren’t they?
So why would they feed them meat?
Your guess is as good as mine, but I suspect increased profit is at the bottom of it somewhere.
Which goes to show, you can’t trust animal feed manufacturers.
Sure, some are better than others, but how can you tell? And what happens when they change hands? Ethics may not be so important to the new owner.
Then there was the realisation that meat from BSE infected cows could cross the species line and, by eating it, humans could get a similar disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
And, of course, dogs can get it too!
The brain and spine are the parts most affected in BSE infected cows. Both the brain and the spine, along with all the other meats humans tend not to eat, are used in pet food manufacture.
There’s talk that this may become illegal in the USA. That’s great news, don’t get me wrong.
But can the law be effectively implemented? Policing laws cost money. Let’s be realistic – that’s more likely to go to other, human causes.
